SKILL 08 / GET HOME BAGS

START WITH THE ROUTE.
PACK FOR REAL NEEDS.
FIELD TEST EVERYTHING.

A Get Home Bag should help you move from where you commonly are to where you need to be. Build it around your route, environment, season, realistic physical ability and likely problems—not an internet checklist.

Start With The Fundamentals

BUILD THE SYSTEM

01

ROUTE

How far might you travel? What bridges, water, roads, neighborhoods or alternate routes matter? Your geography should shape the bag.

02

CORE NEEDS

Water, weather protection, navigation, basic first aid, light, communications and appropriate food usually matter more than novelty gear.

03

ABILITY

Weight changes everything. Build around what you can realistically carry and adjust the plan when your body, season or route changes.

Practical Field Skills

WHAT TO PRACTICE

LAYERED PLAN

Vehicle supplies, everyday carry and the bag can support each other. You do not need every possible item duplicated in one backpack.

FOOD & WATER

Pack realistic calories and water capacity for your route. Rotate consumables and know where resupply may or may not be possible.

FIELD TEST

Walk with the loaded bag. Use the gear. Eat the food. Filter water. Find out what rubs, leaks, breaks or never gets used.

🎒 SHAUN'S FIELD NOTE

Gear helps, but familiarity matters more. Practice this skill when conditions are easy so you aren't trying to learn it for the first time when conditions aren't.

Avoid The Usual Traps

COMMON MISTAKES

01

Building from someone else’s checklist.

02

Packing so much weight that movement suffers.

03

Ignoring seasonal weather.

04

Carrying gear you have never used.

05

Forgetting route-specific obstacles.

06

Never walking any distance with the finished bag.

REWYLD FIELD CHALLENGE

TAKE THE SKILL OUTSIDE.

Load your actual bag and walk a realistic local route. Track what you used, what annoyed you, what was missing and what could be removed.
